Member Deborah Honeck recently traveled to Villa del Arco following the government-mandated shutdowns that took place across the world. Below she shares a brief recap of her extraordinary experience.

“On this trip, my daughter Catalina and I stayed at Villa del Arco in Cabo San Lucas.  Catalina’s birthday was on Sunday during our trip, and she turned 11 years old this year.  She was able to complete her school lessons online while we were in Cabo and enjoyed the resort and activities as well.

We left San Francisco the day after wildfire smoke turned the sky at home orange and dark it was surreal. Early the next morning, we got up super early for our direct flight on Alaska Airlines.  The updated procedures for cleanliness and wearing masks helped make us feel safe at the gate and while on the flight. Immigration and Customs lines were very smooth as well.  When we arrived in Cabo and as we began gathering our luggage so that we could depart from the airport our driver was there waiting to pick us up. It was a relief to see the blue sky and the blue Sea of Cortez as we drove to the resort.

Catalina and I don’t have identical travel preferences. I tend to fill my days with experiences, whereas she wants to enjoy downtime in the room, on the balcony, and at the pool.  Because I was with Catalina, we spent time at the pool, enjoying the water and having refreshments.  I also visited the spa for the first time. The Desert Spa is beautiful, my massage was heavenly, and Catalina’s face seemed to glow after her facial.

I talked Catalina into joining me on some of the following excursions:

Crystal Boat Tour – During this tour, you will take a trip across the sea in a see-through boat and will be able to see through the whole boat like looking through a snorkel mask.

Swimming with Dolphins – During this excursion, an instructor guided us along for a swim with the dolphins. The dolphins danced with us, made sounds, performed tricks, and allowed rides. It was amazing to be with a dolphin and close enough to touch it.

Horseback Riding and Baby Sea Turtle (Hatchlings) Release into the Pacific OceanThis was spectacular.  I had been to Carisuva last year for a horseback ride, and I saw a few baby turtles then. The booking agent arranged for us to meet the veterinary naturalist who allowed us to help release the baby turtles.

Following that, we rode horses to the Pacific Beach, where our small group released about 50 baby turtles that had hatches about an hour earlier.  The turtle’s journey across the sandy beach into the water was charming, and we were all cheering for them.

Morning Parasailing Tour – I thoroughly enjoyed this exciting sky excursion. Catalina chose to sit out that adventure and just watch.

On Catalina’s birthday, she chose to spend the day relaxing at the resort. There she enjoyed a bubble bath in a jetted bathtub, room service breakfast, relaxing in the suite, unwinding in the pool, and a birthday dinner at Neptune’s.  The waiters brought her a beautiful dessert and sang happy birthday.

On the evening before our departure, we returned to Neptune’s.  The waiters remembered us and were very kind and attentive. Jimmy made a “Mexican Coffee” for me, it was quite a show, and so tasty!

We could relax and feel safe at Villa del Arco! Our stay was a nice relief in this crazy Covid year.”
